Image For CHARACTER OF MERIWETHER (PB)

CHARACTER OF MERIWETHER (PB)

Item Description
Paper Back book. Meriwether Lewis commanded the most important exploration mission in the early history of the United States. Clay S. Jenkinson takes a fresh look at Lewis, not to offer a paper cutout hero but to describe and explain a hyperserious young man of great complexity who found the wilderness of Upper Louisiana as exacting as it was exhilarating. Jenkinson sees Lewis as a troubled soul before he left St. Charles, Missouri, in May 1804. His experiences in lands "upon which the foot of civilized man had never trodden" further fractured his sense of himself. His hiring William Clark as his "partner in discovery" was, Jenkinson shows, the most intelligent decision he ever made. When Clark was nearby, Lewis's leadership was stable and productive. When Clark was absent and thus unable to provide a calming influence on his mercurial friend, Lewis tended to get into trouble. Jenkinson argues that if Clark had been with Lewis on the Natchez Trace, the governor of Upper Louisiana would not have killed himself. Jenkinson sees Lewis's 1809 suicide not as an inexplicable mystery, but the culmination of a series of pressures that extend back to the expedition and perhaps even earlier.

Item Description
A paper back book. Clay S. Jenkinson’s love affair with North Dakota and the Great Plains is the central theme of his life. For the Love of North Dakota is a compilation of essays—many of which began as newspaper columns in the Bismarck Tribune—that explores two themes: the changing face of North Dakota as it makes the transition from an agrarian enclave at the heart of the North American continent to a more globally connected urban and industrial society; and the spirit of place of North Dakota, an isolated, windswept, subarctic grassland that has its own enchantment and astonishing beauty. Jenkinson writes lovingly about the Little Missouri River Valley and the badlands of western North Dakota.

Image For NOT ALL HEROES (HC)

NOT ALL HEROES (HC)

Item Description
A hard cover book. Gary Skogen's tour in Vietnam (1971-72) was the best year if his life. Living with fellow CID investigators in an isolated hooch overlooking the South CHina Sea at the U.S. Base at Chu Lai; Skogen enforced military drug laws during his working hours and yet managed to pursue a life of perfect hedonism far from the farm in southwestern North Dakota where he grew up. With unlimited access to cheap beer, a wide variety of compliant Vietnamese women, and a powder blue jeep he had somehow commandeered, Skogen perfected his criminal investigative skills at a time when U.S. troop morale had its nadir. This unconventional, un-heroic, and unapologetic memoir tells the story of one man's Vietnam War. Together with 80% of the two million men and women who served in Vietnam, Skogen spent his time behind the lines, mostly behind a desk. He did not slog on midnight patrols through Viet Cong tunnels or rice paddies studded with booby traps. He spent his year arresting and investigating the men he calls, "dickheads," who endangered the lives of their fellow soldiers as well as themselves by giving themselves over to unrestrained drug use. Skogen's narrative proves that some whose names are incised in the Vietnam Memorial Wall died in less than heroic circumstances: drug overdoses, alcohol-induced asphyxiation, barroom brawls, some of them racially-motivated, fragging, and suicide. Backed by impeccable research in the criminal files if the National Archives and Records Administration, this unromantic narrative reveals the sordidness of the war in its late phases, and questions the validity of seeing all Vietnam Veterans as "victims." Originally entitles The Best of Times & Times, Not All Heroes is really two beautifully integrated books under a single cover: an account of the Apocalypse Now endgame of the Vietnam War, and a M*A*S*H-like narrative of Skogen's yearlong tropical vacation in a pleasure ground where sexual favors were too cheap to meter. You may not much like the author of this book - at least as he portrays himself here - but you will find it hard to put his fascinating revelation down. Born and raised in Hettinger, North Dakota, Gary E. Skogen. a Vietnam Veteran, is retired from the Los Angles Police Department, Gary did active duty in the U.S. Army from January 1966 to September 1973. He served in Viietnam from February 1971 to January 1972. This is his first book.

Image For TURNING POINTS (HC)

TURNING POINTS (HC)

Item Description
Hard cover book. George "Bud" Sinner was the governor of North Dakota from 1984 to1992, one of the most difficult periods in North Dakota history. Sinner became governor during a time of crisis on the northern Great Plains: the traditional problems of outmigration and uncertain commodity prices were dramatically worsened by a protracted drought, weak tax revenues, high interest rates, and one of the greatest farm foreclosure crises in American history. Written in Sinner's warm, approachable style, his memoirs touch upon the serious, the hilarious, and the heartbreaking. This is the story of a Catholic farm boy who studied for the priesthood but discovered that his true vocation was public service. Turning Points exhibits Bud Sinner's characteristic outspokenness about life and power, friendship and faith, agriculture and community, public affairs and personal ethics.
